Understanding Chinese Plywood

For structural & non-structural applications

Meyer Timber stock an extensive range of Chinese plywood panels.

To help with your purchasing decisions, our stock profile is split into four distinct ranges; Trade, Commercial, Classic and Premium. You can find more details of these ranges and the products available in each below.

Meyer Trade Plywood

The Trade plywood range is an entry level range for those users whose primary consideration is price. The core of the Trade range is based entirely of Chinese poplar. It is manufactured with an EN314 Bond Class 1 and therefore suitable for dry interior uses only where there are no particular requirements for strength.

Typical uses would be EN335 use Class 1 and include non-construction applications such as furniture, lightweight packing cases, interior fittings in caravans and motorhomes and exhibition stands.

The Trade range can also be used for temporary protection of permanent building elements during refurbishment and in other construction processes where the service life will not exceed more than a few weeks.

Meyer Commercial Plywood

The Commercial plywood range is a mid-level range providing economy with limited functionality. The core of the Classic range is based on Chinese poplar but there is one combi variant incorporating some eucalyptus veneers adding additional strength while retaining flexibility.

The Commercial range is manufactured with an EN314 Bond Class 1 and is suitable for dry interior uses in Regulated Building Work but again where price is the major consideration.

Thicknesses of 9mm and greater have been tested for their strength and the mechanical values can be given for them. Typical uses might include a wall lining or floor decking where there is no risk of water ingress or high humidity during the life of the building. Uses must be restricted to EN 335 Use Class 1.

Thicknesses of 3.6 and 5.5mm have not been tested for their strength and no mechanical values can be given for them. Typical uses would include internal linings and trim in dry interior situations only.

Meyer Classic Plywood

The Classic plywood range is a higher-level range providing good value for money with additional functionality. The core of the Classic range is based entirely of Chinese poplar and is manufactured with an EN314 Bond Class 2 and suitable for all uses in Regulated Construction Work but not exposure to the weather. Uses could be humid situations or incur occasional wetting.

Thicknesses of 9mm and greater have been tested for their strength and the mechanical values can be given for them. Typical uses might include  roof decking where there is the risk of high humidity during the life of the building. Uses must be restricted to EN 335 Use Class 2.

Thicknesses of 3.6 and 5.5mm have not been tested for their strength and no mechanical values can be given for them. Typical uses would include internal linings and trim where there is the risk of high humidity during the life of the building. Uses must be restricted to EN 335 Use Class 2. These thinner panels would be ideal for van lining and portable buildings.

Meyer Premium Plywood

The Premium plywood range is the top-level range providing excellent value for money with additional core strength. The core of the Premium range is based entirely of eucalyptus, making it the strongest plywood in our Chinese range.

The Premium Range is manufactured with an EN314 Bond Class 2 and suitable for all uses in Regulated Construction Work but not exposure to the weather. Uses could be humid situations or incur occasional wetting.

Thicknesses of 9mm and greater have been tested for their strength and the mechanical values can be given for them. The mechanical strength values would give a measurable improvement on the Classic range.

These thinner panels would also be ideal for van lining and portable buildings, where light weight and strength are major considerations.

Being 100% Eucalyptus core, this is a stronger and stiffer panel than the Poplar core Classic range.

Book Your Place at one of our Plywood Seminars

European Standards, Declarations of Performance, Factory Production Control...It’s all so confusing – but it doesn’t have to be!

In an effort to help our customers understand more about the different plywood standards including how to buy it, we are now offering our customers the opportunity to take part in one of our Plywood Seminars. The seminars are free of charge and at it you will learn:

  • How the plywood industry is changing
  • Which European Standards are relevant to plywood
  • How they work together to define performance
  • What a Declaration of Performance is and where to get one
  • Why the performance of plywood is improving
  • How to take advantage of better performing plywood

These seminars are a must for buyers, sellers and specifiers alike. Please contact your local Meyer Timber distribution centre for more details and to book yours.
